If the gourmet in search of small Ticino taverns feels like travelling a few kilometres, then take the road from Agno up to Vernate. Having arrived on the southern slope of the San Bernardo hill, you will discover a small, charming Malcantone municipality with a breathtaking view of the lake and an historic centre that offers peace of mind to the modern traveller. Leave your car in one of the municipal car parks, take Via alla Chiesa and, after passing an archway in the centre, the alley opens up to reveal the small "Osteria in Piazza". Until a few months ago it was a tea-room with a shop selling local products. But in order to offer the local community and tourists the possibility of having a restaurant in the village where they could spend a few carefree hours in good company, Flavio and his partner Fatima renovated the old building in the nucleus, which is now cosy and bright. There is a small room with a bar on the ground floor and another, more discreet room with an open kitchen, which is accessed by a beautiful wooden spiral staircase or from the side entrance.
Fatima is in the dining room, while Flavio is the chef; with long experience in Italian and Ticino restaurants, he offers sunny, Mediterranean cuisine, where everything is freshly prepared. The specialities are fish, but there is no lack of dishes cooked with local products, accompanied by a measured but excellent wine list, both from Ticino and Italy. Among the land starters, there are mixed Ticinese cold cuts and a speciality, fresh cheese baked in foil; among the seafood, there are crispy king prawns in the chef's style, a trio of carpaccios and Luciana-style moscardini. After the penne alla contadina, the gnocchi alla sorrentina, the radicchio and taleggio cheese risotto or the excellent spaghetti with clams and cherry tomatoes and rocket, you can enjoy beef fillet, entrecote with balsamic vinegar and rocket or the schnitzel 'as you like it'. And then the fish, always excellent and fresh: king prawns au gratin, fillet of sea bream baked 'my way', sole "alla mugnaia". And then the house 'specialities' including spaghetti allo scoglio, fritto misto di mare, knife-cut beef tartar and giant cordon-bleu; every Thursday evening cod cooked according to a different recipe.
