Artistic works

An outdoor walking museum of artistic works now stands within the central confi nes of Brè, realised by the Pasquale Gilardi ”Lelèn“ Circle in collaboration with Visarte (Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects). The permanent exhibition of an increasing number of works promises to make the enchanting Ticinese village (where the artists Pasquale Gilardi ”Lelèn“, 1885 – 1934; Luigi Taddei, 1898 – 1992; Wilhelm Schmid, 1892 – 1971; and József Biró, 1887 – 1975; lived and worked), known to a more vast public of art enthusiasts. The works begin in the square in front of the church and are placed at various stations throughout the nucleus of Brè. They contain paintings, sculptures, and mosaic works of noted and recognized living artists.

Museum

Located in the centre of the village Brè, the Museum is dedicated to the work of the painter Wilhelm Schmid, an exponent of the German New Objectivity of the 20’

Schmid, who moved to Ticino in 1943. The collection documents the important stages of his artistic development, marked by simplifi ed forms, plain colours and strong luminosity.

Other art presences in Brè

In addition to the artistic sights described above, one may admire in Brè other noteworthy works of art. In 1948 the Hungarian painter József Biró (1887 – 1975) painted in fresco virtually the entire parish church. The oil paintings of the Way of the Cross (Via Crucis) are also by the same hand. Inside there are two Seicento frescoes (Sant’Antonio Abate and San Carlo Borromeo) and two Settecento frescoes (The martyrs San Fedele and San Simone), whilst on the façade and on a wall of same building are frescoes by local artist Luigi Taddei (1898 – 1992). In the cemetery among several other works, particularly fi ne is the bas-relief ”La Dea della pace“ (The Goddess of Peace) - a marble sculpture by Pasquale Gilardi ”Lelèn“ (1885 – 1934).
